BRUNEI 11 October 2019 — The Philippine Embassy in Brunei Darussalam featured the Filipino traditional game ‘patintero’ at the ASEAN Sports Day held at the Multi-Purpose Hall, Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex in Bandar Seri Begawan on 22 September 2019.

Jointly organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) and the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sports (MCYS) of Brunei Darussalam to celebrate the 52nd anniversary of ASEAN, the ASEAN Sports Day brought together senior officials of the host government and ASEAN Ambassadors and members of their diplomatic missions. 

The event kicked off with a 30-minute outdoor aerobics, followed by a three kilometers fun run around the sports complex. ASEAN countries showcased their respective traditional games, with the Philippine Embassy featuring the ‘patintero,’ which Ambassador to Brunei Christopher B. Montero gamely played with the Guest of Honor, Brunei’s Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Awang Haji Aminuddin Ihsan bin Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok Dato Seri Paduka Haji Abidin, together with the other ASEAN Ambassadors. 

After successfully reaching the finish line, Philippine-made ice cream was served to Minister Aminuddin Ihsan, ASEAN Ambassadors, senior government officials, diplomats from ASEAN missions, and members of the Filipino Community. 

Aside from traditional games, mixed teams from various ASEAN Missions and officials of the MFA and MCYS played futsal for men and netball for women tourney.

The event manifested the commitment of the government of Brunei Darussalam and ASEAN diplomatic missions to support ASEAN’s community building efforts fully. END
