UP Rondalla Visits Hawaii

HONOLULU 14 October 2019 — In celebration of Filipino-American History month, the University of the Philippines Rondalla (UP Rondalla) traveled to Hawaii for a series of performances, lectures, and workshops on 03 to 07 October 2019.

During the tour, the group held activities to introduce the unique music produced by a rondalla, or ensemble of string instruments, to audiences in Hawaii.

The members of the UP Rondalla, led by UP College of Music Professor Marie Jocelyn Marfil, called on Consul General Joselito A. Jimeno on 03 October 2019. During the call, they performed several musical pieces including, “Dahil sa Iyo”, “Mutya ng Pasig” (sung by soprano Mariefrance Ballester), “Pamulinawen,” and “Manang Biday.”

The UP Rondalla also held lectures and workshops at the University of Hawaii, East-West Center, and Filipino Community Center. They also had free performances at the Ala Moana Center Stage, Honolulu Central Seventh-Day Adventist Church, and Farrington High School Auditorium.

The UP Rondalla’s tour in Hawaii was made possible through the combined efforts of the Philippine Consulate General in Honolulu, the University of the Philippines (UP), the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), and the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR), and in partnership with the University of the Philippines Alumni Association in Hawaii (UPAAH).
