PH Embassy in Mexico Joins 50th Anniv of Manila-Acapulco Sister-City Agreement, Int’l Day of the Galleon

MEXICO 06 November 2019 — The Philippine Embassy in Mexico participated in the commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of the Manila-Acapulco Sister-City Agreement and the International Day of the Galleon at Acapulco, Mexico on 19 to 20 October 2019.
Prior to the celebration, Ambassador Demetrio R. Tuason paid a courtesy call on Acapulco Mayor Adela Roman Ocampo on 19 October 2019. They both highlighted the importance of the commemoration of the Galleon Trade as it began the close historical and cultural relations between Mexico and the Philippines.
Other activities included a wreath laying ceremony at the marker of the Return Voyage of the Galleon at the Plaza Mexico-Filipinas in Acapulco City and the inauguration of the 13th La Nao International Festival Acapulco at the Fuerte de San Diego. The La Nao is an annual event organized by the government of Acapulco in commemoration of the Galleon Trade.
The International Day of the Galleon was celebrated with an art exhibit at Casa de la Cultura featuring the work of contemporary Filipino artist Anabel Reyna. A lecture on the history of the Manila Galleon was also conducted by Professor Cristina Barron Soto, a Mexican historian and professor at the Universidad Iberoamericana specializing in the history of the Galleon.
After the lecture, Philippine Embassy personnel performed Filipino folk dances such as Salakot, Binasuan, and Tinikling. The Filipino song “Dahil Sayo” was also sung by the Embassy Interpreter/translator Georgina Aranzabal.
The program ended with a sampling of Filipino dishes like lechon kawali, adobong manok, pansit bihon, sweet and sour fish fillet, and leche flan prepared by Acapulo-based Filipino Chef Gaby Dingle Acap. END
