PH Chefs Featured in Humanities Guåhan’s Fiestan Salu Salo

AGANA 31 October 2019 – Filipino Chefs Jo Ong and Mylene Valdez were featured in Humanities Guåhan’s fourth Eat Your Heritage food democracy tour, “Fiestan Salu Salo: Celebrating the Flavors of Guam and the Philippines”  from 30 September to 5 October 2019.

The week-long food tour, which highlighted Guam’s important relationship with the Philippines through an exploration of Filipino and CHamoru food traditions, included workshops with culinary students in Guam’s public high schools and at the Guam Community College and a pastry workshop. It culminated in a 5-course interpretive dinner in collaboration with Guam chefs Peter Dueñas, Paul Kerner, Mirko Agostini, and Jasmine Nadres at the Hyatt Regency Guam on 05 October 2019 featuring a special menu of locally sourced ingredients.

The Philippine Consulate General in Agana represented by Consul Mark Francis C. Hamoy and Cultural Officer Rosemarie Ramos-Blaser attended the community talk. It shared gastronomic histories of Guam and the Philippines highlighted by presentations from young Filipino-Guamanians and a talk by Chef Ong on traditional Filipino gastronomy at the Guma I Taotao Guam (Government House) in Agana Heights on 30 September 2019 and 03 October 2019.

Humanities Guåhan, headed by Executive Director Kimberlee Kihleng, is an independent non-profit organization that presents and supports public humanities programs and projects for the people of Guam. END
