PH Calls for a More Inclusive UNESCO

PARIS 11 November 2019 – Permanent Delegate to UNESCO and Ambassador to France Ma. Theresa P. Lazaro delivered the Philippine statement during the Plenary Debate of the 207th Session of the UNESCO Executive Board on 15 October 2019 at the UNESCO World Heritage Centre.
In her statement, Ambassador Lazaro called for a more open and inclusive UNESCO, delivering on the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda, where all its Member States, big and small, large contributors, as well as those with more modest means, have reasonable opportunities to serve on the Executive Board.
“The Philippines strongly supports rotation as a principle of good governance that enhances multilateralism and international cooperation. It embraces the values of UNESCO and the Sustainable Development Goals of diversity, equality, equity, solidarity and leaving no one behind,” said Ambassador Lazaro.
As a member of the UNESCO Executive Board, the Philippines works on enhancing the capacity of Member States, particularly developing countries, to achieve sustainable development and lasting peace and security. The Philippines also works on improving the efficiency and governance procedures of the Organization.
The Philippines was elected as member in November 2017 and will continue to serve on the Board until 2021. END
