SEOUL 20 November 2019 – As part of its year-long celebration of the 70th anniversary of Philippines–South Korea bilateral relations and as an effort to engage Filipino and Korean youth living in South Korea, the Philippine Embassy in Seoul conducted the Filipino Language Public Speaking Contest on 29 September 2019 at the Embassy’s Rizal Hall.

Dozens of Filipino and Korean youth participated in the two-stage contest, which has two categories: Elementary and Middle School Category, and High School Category. During the first round of the contest, interested youth were required to submit an essay in the Filipino language on any topic as long as it touches on both the Philippines and Korea. After careful screening, seven contestants were shortlisted and invited to deliver their essays at the Final Round held at the Philippine Embassy.

Filipino-Korean middle school pupil Soojeong Lee from Seoul took the First Prize for the Elementary and Middle School Category with her piece, “Ang Bayan ni Nanay at ni Tatay.” For the High School Category, Hana Cho, a Korean student from Gangneung Province, won First Prize with her piece, “Ang Kahalagahan ng Koneksyon.”

In his welcome remarks, Ambassador to South Korea Noe A. Wong expressed his appreciation for the participation of all the contestants and the support of their parents and communities. He also thanked them for their contribution to the excellent people-to-people relations between the Philippines and South Korea. END
