XIAMEN 20 November 2019 — The Philippine Consulate General in Xiamen, in partnership with Tawid Heritage Center, hosted a lecture entitled, “Canciones Del Folclore Filipino En Espanol: La Bella Filipina, Circa 1700s-1800s (Philippine Folk Songs in Spanish: The Beautiful Filipina)” on 16 October 2019 at the Consulate General’s Bulwagang Bagumbayan.

Tawid Cultural Center President Dr. Evelyn F. Cabanban presented the lecture to members of the Filipino Community in Xiamen, Filipino Social Science teachers from the Manila Xiamen International School, and Filipino students from Fujian Normal University, as well as professors and students from Xiamen University’s Nanyang (Southeast Asia) Institute. The activity ended with a short question and answer portion with Dr. Cabanban.

Dr. Cabanban, through folk songs gathered from Ilocos to Zamboanga, reintroduced to the audience the Filipina of the 1700s-1800s. Through these songs, the Filipina was portrayed as a symbol of purity and hope, an epitome of beauty, a sophisticated counterpart to her “European sisters,” and a source of comfort “that eases the pain of longing.” Dr. Cabanban further noted that though the descriptions were attributed to the Filipina woman, the songs also referred to the motherland.

During the question and answer portion, Filipino and Chinese members of the audience thanked Dr. Cabanban for the insightful glimpses into the character of the Filipina. END
