SWITZERLAND 25 November 2019 – Over 100 delegates from government, industry, academe and civil society convened in Geneva on 28 October 2019 at an Ad Hoc Expert Meeting organized by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) to further analyze the potential of the creative economy as an engine for global economic growth and sustainable development.
At a panel on national strategies and capacity-building for thriving creative industries, Deputy Permanent Representative Maria Teresa T. Almojuela elaborated on the country’s efforts to provide an enabling framework for its creative industries, highlighting the examples of technology-driven sectors such as animation and film, and cultural heritage such as the piña-seda fabric industry.
The ad hoc expert meeting, the first of its kind organized by UNCTAD, comes at the heels of the latest publication of the Creative Economy Outlook, which profiles the creative industries in 130 countries, including the Philippines.
The creative economy has been touted as a critical sector to foster innovation, knowledge transfer and inclusive development, outpacing global economic growth trends and continuing to expand. Nevertheless, challenges and gaps remain, especially for developing countries in fully taking advantage of the opportunities in the creative economy.
UNCTAD envisions taking an even more relevant role in assisting Member States address these challenges and will continue its activities in research, publication of reports and organization of meetings on the creative economy. END
