PH Delegation Participates in Archipelagic, Island States Forum

JAKARTA 28 November 2019 – Philippine Ambassador to Indonesia Leehiong T. Wee headed the Philippine delegation at the 2nd Ministerial Meeting of the Archipelagic and Island States Forum hosted by Indonesia’s Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investments on 01 November 2019 in Manado.
Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investments Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan emphasized the importance of cooperation in addressing the challenges faced by archipelagic and island states. He stressed on governments’ leverage on technology and called for the collaboration with startup companies to mitigate environmental challenges such as marine plastic debris and sea level rise.
In Ambassador Wee’s statement, he highlighted the crucial role of marine assets in driving the Philippines’ economic development and social progress. He also drew attention to President Rodrigo Roa Duterte’s commitment to strike an optimum balance between utilization and protection of the environment.
The Archipelagic and Island States Forum was attended by representatives from 25 archipelagic and island states. It produced an Outcome Document which, among others, called on the cooperation of participating countries in the development of a blue economy, and to leverage on technology in addressing the challenges faced by archipelagic and island states.
