Global Pact on Mercury to Help PH Protect Human Health, Environment
PHOTO: Permanent Representative of the Philippine Mission to the United Nations and Other International Organizations in Geneva Ambassador Evan P. Garcia attends the opening of the third Conference of the Parties to the Minamata Convention on Mercury in Geneva on 25 November 2019.
The Minamata Convention, named after a Japanese city that experienced the devastating effects of mercury poisoning in the last century, is a global treaty that seeks to protect the environment and safeguard human health through measures such as the control, regulation, and eventual phase-out of the use of mercury in industries like gold mining. One of the original signatories when the Convention was adopted in 2013, the Philippines is undertaking domestic procedures related to its ratification. (Geneva PM photo)
