VIENNA 13 December 2019 — Philippine Ambassador to Austria Maria Cleofe R. Natividad, along with Department of Energy Assistant Secretary Gerardo D. Erguiza, Jr., lead Team Philippines in discussions with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), commencing on 12 November 2019, to develop an integrated work plan for nuclear power infrastructure in the Philippines.
The team is composed of representatives from the Department of Energy (DOE), Department of Science and Technology (DOST), Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (PNRI) and the Philippine Embassy in Vienna.
The work plan will serve as a guiding document to plan and track cooperation with the IAEA on nuclear infrastructure development. The plan will touch on a comprehensive list of 19 different nuclear issues, ranging from nuclear safety and security, to legal frameworks, to funding and financing, to waste management.
Nuclear power is being considered by the Philippine government as a possible option to provide sustainable, stable, secure, sufficient, accessible and reasonably priced energy to the Filipino people.
The week-long discussions are in line with the efforts of President Rodrigo Roa Duterte’s administration to diversify the country’s sources of energy and support the development of the Philippine economy for inclusive growth. END
