PH Delegation Joins 9th FEALAC Foreign Ministers´ Meeting in Santo Domingo

MEXICO 16 December 2019 – The Philippine delegation headed by Ambassador to Mexico Demetrio R. Tuason, Special Envoy and Personal Representative of Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro L. Locsin, Jr., participated in the 9th Forum on East Asia and Latin America Cooperation (FEALAC) Foreign Ministers´ Meeting (FMM) held in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic on 09 November 2019.
During his intervention, Ambassador Tuason highlighted the importance of expanding and deepening inter-regional cooperation between East Asia and Latin America through the forum. He also brought up the first national project of the Philippines established in 2002 under the ambit of FEALAC, the Philippine Academic Consortium on Latin American Studies (PACLAS), which creates a network of academic and research institutes and facilities to foster mutual cooperation in a wide spectrum of endeavor involving Latin American studies.
The FMM discussed two FEALAC-wide projects on inequality reduction and development of value chains which are being implemented jointly by the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP).
FEALAC, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, is an inter-regional multilateral organization composed of 36 member. The member countries, consisting of states 16 East Asian countries including ASEAN and 20 Latin American countries, comprise of 33.5% of the world’s area, 39.1% of population, 34.1% of GDP, and 33.4% of world trade.
