MOSCOW 23 December 2019 –– The Philippine Embassy in Moscow updated the Filipino community and members of the Russian public who regularly access the Embassy Facebook Page on the ongoing fight against illegal drugs on 24 November 2019.

Philippine Consul General to Moscow Robert Ferrer gave the briefing as part of the regular Embassy Kapihan as a culmination of the Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Week as mandated by Presidential Proclamation no. 124 series of 2001.

During the briefing, which was attended by more than 80 members of the Filipino community, the Embassy presented the Philippine Anti-Drug Campaign in Real Numbers with the catchphrase “Tunay na Numero, Tunay na Tagumpay, Tunay na Pagbabago” to belie claims of rampant extra-judicial killings as a result of ‘Operation Tokhang’ (the campaign has now been renamed and reconstituted under the Philippine Anti-Drug Enforcement Agency or PDEA). As of 28 February 2019, for example, the official number of people who were killed was only 5,281 as opposed to bloated numbers in the media and in international Non-Governmental Organizations campaigning against extra-judicial killings, and international human rights organizations.

The update also included practical advice for Filipinos, especially women, who are being preyed upon by unscrupulous male foreign nationals to be unwittingly engaged as drug mules through various scams.

The talk also featured and clarified the role of the Inter-Agency Committee on Anti-Illegal Drugs. END
