BUCHAREST 02 January 2020 — Officials of the Philippine Embassy in Budapest and the Philippine Overseas Labor Office (POLO) conducted a consular mission with focus on Assistance-to-Nationals and Labor matters in Romania from 30 November to 02 December 2019.
Philippine Embassy in Budapest Consul Ria E. Gorospe, Labor Attaché Corina Buñag, and Attaché Lallaine Marie V. Uy visited Teleferic Hotel in Brasov and Blue River Bucuresti in Bucharest to inspect and meet with the management of the two companies and their Filipino employees. Both Romanian companies employ a considerable number of Filipino workers in Romania.
The team also met with officials from the International Organization for Migration (IOM), and with representatives of Romanian recruitment agencies and officers of the Filipino community in Romania to discuss emerging or current issues on recruitment of Filipino workers. In their meetings, the Embassy officials emphasized the important contribution of overseas workers that directly contribute to the growing economy of the admitting state. They reminded the representatives of recruitment agencies of the need to engage and practice ethical and legal recruitment procedures that involve the employer, Philippine and Romanian recruitment agencies, as well as the overseas worker.
Romania is host to more than 1,300 Filipino nationals who live and work in the country. While there is a growing number of Filipino permanent residents or families of Romanian nationals, majority of this figure still represent overseas Filipino workers.
The Filipino community and the IOM were pleased to note that there is now a POLO that covers Romania and Labor Attaché Buñag will be visiting Romania on a regular basis as effective 23 September 2019, POLO Milan, Italy has expanded its jurisdictional territories to include the countries covered by the Philippine Embassy in Budapest under the one-country team Government approach. These countries include Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Moldova, and Serbia. END
