HOUSTON 22 January 2020 –– The Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) represented by its Chairman, Secretary Emmanuel F. Piñol, signed two Memoranda of Understanding (MOU) on the Pilot Implementation of the Mindanao Sorghum Development Program at the Philippine Consulate General in Houston on 16 December 2019.

The first MOU, signed between MinDA and Scott Seeds Co., represented by chief executive officer Coby Kriegshauser, acknowledges the latter’s donation of 25 tons of sorghum seeds to MinDA. Meanwhile, in the second MOU, signed between MinDA and the Provincial Government of Davao del Norte, represented by Governor Edwin I. Jubahib, the latter committed several areas for the planting of sorghum under the Mindanao Sorghum Development Program.

The signing of the MOUs formed the highlight of an event entitled “Networking Forum for Mindanaoco-organized by Philippine Consulate General in Houston and MinDA, with several members of the business community in Houston in attendance.

During the Forum, Secretary Piñol hailed the agreement as “game-changing” as it promises huge economic and political benefits for Mindanao. Among others, it will provide livelihood to indigenous communities in Mindanao, and serve as alternate crops for banana farmers in Davao del Norte.

Highlighting the similarity between the two regions, Phillipine Consul General to Houston Jerril G. Santos said that “Mindanao and Texas seem to be natural partners”, and hoped that this may be the first of many areas where the two regions would have partnerships. END
