DUBAI 16 January 2020 — The Philippine Consulate General in Dubai, in cooperation with Dubai Police, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Ministry of Interior, held a forum on Tolerance and Co-Existence on 26 December 2019.

In observance for the Year of Tolerance and honoring the UAE founding father Sheikh Zayed Al Nahyan, the forum looks back on how cultural and social tolerance — key pillars of the nation — impacted the community they represent. The event was declared on January 2019 by the UAE government.

“The tolerant society of the UAE is a major factor in becoming the second-largest concentration of Filipinos in the Middle East. I urge each Filipino community member in Dubai and the Northern Emirates to be always mindful of their responsibilities to respect the culture of their host country,” Philippine Consul General to Dubai Paul Raymund Cortes said in his remarks.

Dubai-based entrepreneur from India and Christian Ministry Group member Sailesh Nathan underscored religious and cultural tolerance in the UAE which allowed non-Emiratis like him to thrive in his adopted country. Managing Director of New Perspective Media Vince Ang, who publishes The Filipino Times, shared his experience on how the UAE made it possible to accept Filipinos, other nationalities with different cultural and religious beliefs, to integrate in their country.

Speaking on behalf of the host government, Dubai Police General Department of Community Happiness Colonel Al Marri, discussed one of the government’s approaches to making Dubai a truly welcoming and tolerant host city. She also informed the audience of her organization’s key programs aimed at improving security and public relations services for all of Dubai residents.

In the open forum, some of the participants shared their personal experiences on tolerance that greatly took effect in their stay in the country. END
