MILAN 28 January 2020 — The Philippine Consulate General in Milan, Italy convened the first General Assembly (GA) of Filipino community (FilCom) leaders from northern Italy on 26 January 2020.
Consul General to Milan Bernadette Therese C. Fernandez, who assumed post on 17 January 2020, presided the event.
An estimated 100 participants representing FilCom organizations from the eight regions that comprise the Consulate’s jurisdiction, namely: Emilia-Romagna, Friuli Venezia-Giuglia, Lombardia, Liguria, Piemonte, Trentino-Alto Aldige, Valle D’Aosta and Veneto attended the GA.
During the assembly, Consul General Fernandez thanked the members of the Filipino community for their support to the Philippine Consulate General in Milan, particularly in the implementation of initiatives aimed at further improving the delivery of consular and other services and for their own efforts to help promote the welfare of fellow Filipinos in northern Italy. Participants were encouraged to help advise Filipinos to take care of their health given the number of debilitating and infectious illnesses afflicting Overseas Filipino Workers.
Participants were provided with a general view of the 2020 programs of the Philippine Consulate General in Milan and the attached agencies particularly the weekend services, most of which will be undertaken in areas outside of Milan, as well as updates on requirements and procedures and the various means to communicate with the Consulate.
The process of sending assistance and aid to victims of the eruption of Taal volcano was announced during the assembly.
A total of 11 members of the Board of Trustees of the Philippine Independence Day Council 2020 for northern Italy were elected by representatives of Filipino community organizations who were authorized to vote. The elected members of the Board will form an Executive Committee that will be tasked to prepare for the PIDC 2020 celebration in Milan in June 2020.
During the assembly, Consul General Fernandez distributed copies of the children’s rights booklet “Ayoko Po Sana” to FilCom leaders representing the eight regions in the Philippine Consulate General in Milan’s jurisdiction who were tasked to hold activities aimed to raise public awareness on the rights of children.
