11 April 2014 - In commemoration of Women’s Month, the Philippine Consulate General in Sydney organized a seminar entitled, “Prevention and Early Detection of Cancer in Women,” last March 31 at the Consulate. The seminar was attended by the Consulate’s personnel, their spouses and family members, and several Filipino community leaders and representatives of Filipino women’s groups in New South Wales (NSW).
The resource speakers at the seminar were Ms. Usha Salagame of the Cancer Epidemiology Research Unit of Cancer Council NSW and Ms. Jhaike G. Braham, Marketing Manager for Projects of Cancer Council NSW.
Ms. Salagame discussed the different kinds of cancer affecting women, their symptoms, types of treatment, and incidence rates in NSW, in Australia, and in the Philippines. Ms. Jhaike Braham showed a video as well as discussed the programs and services extended to the local community by the Cancer Council NSW.
After the talk, the participants actively took part in an open forum. Several of the questions raised were on breakthroughs on cancer treatment, factors that increase risk of developing cancer, and various aspects of healthy living.
Consul General Anne Jalando-on Louis thanked the Cancer Council NSW, particularly Ms. Salagame and Ms. Braham, for collaborating with the Consulate in holding the seminar. Several participants conveyed their appreciation to the Consulate for organizing the very informative and relevant seminar on an issue that impacts on the lives of many women. END
