BUENOS AIRES 26 December 2019 — The Philippine Embassy in Argentina marked the simultaneous worldwide launching of the 500-day Countdown to the 2021 Quincentennial Commemorations by the Philippine Government through the lighting of colorful parols (Christmas lanterns) inside the Philippine Embassy Chancery on 15 December 2019.
The Quincentennial Commemorations, with the theme, “Victory and Humanity,” aims to commence a 500-day countdown to the Quincentennial Celebrations on 27 April 2021, which marks Lapu-Lapu’s victory in the Battle of Mactan against the Spanish forces under Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan.
Ambassador to Argentina Linglingay F. Lacanlale then led the Embassy personnel in the rendition of the official song of the Quincentennial Celebrations, “Bagani”, with only the Christmas lanterns lighting the premises. The Department of Foreign Affairs is a member of the National Quincentennial Committee which was created by Executive Order No. 55 Series of 2018.
Both Argentina and the Philippines are linked by the momentous Magellan Voyage. Before arriving in the Philippines in March 1521, Magellan passed through what is now Argentina, where the Straits of Magellan is now named after him. END
