CHICAGO 02 January 2020 — The Philippine Consulate General in Chicago joined the launch of the 500-day countdown to the 2021 Quincentennial Commemoration of the Victory at Mactan in the Philippines on 18 December 2019 at the Philippine Consulate General’s Kalayaan Hall.

Consul General to Chicago Gina A. Jamoralin officially led the launch of the 500-day countdown in Chicago by displaying the logo of the 500-Day countdown to the 2021 Quincentennial Commemorations and the ceremonial lighting of a Philippine parol or lantern.

The Consul General stressed the historical importance and cultural significance of the 500th anniversary of the first circumnavigation of the world led by Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan, with a focus on the gallantry and spirit of freedom of Lapu-Lapu, ruler of Mactan Island, Cebu, during the 1521 Battle of Mactan against the Spaniards.

With the theme “Victory and Humanity,” the National Quincentennial Committee has put together celebratory events leading to the 500th Anniversary of the Victory at Mactan to be celebrated in April 2021. END
