AGANA 03 March 2020 – The Philippine Consulate General in Agana held a town hall meeting with the Filipino community in Guam to discuss the U.S. Census 2020 on 25 February 2020 at the Sentro Rizal Agana.
Consul Mark Francis C. Hamoy, Acting Head of Post of the Philippine Consulate General in Agana (Guam), encouraged the Filipino community to take part in this important exercise.
"The participation and active involvement of all Filipinos in the U.S. Census of 2020, especially here in Guam, is not just part of your civic duty, but a personal effort that will have a profound impact on the next 10 years,” Consul Hamoy said.
"Countries, like the Philippines and the United States, conduct a national census every 10 years as a means to capture a snapshot of vital demographic data that help set funding, determine representation, and identify priority programs to benefit the whole population," Consul Hamoy added.
With Guam Census Office's objective for all Guam residents to be "counted once, only once, and in the right place," 2020 Census Office Manager Bernadine C. Gines presented with Partnership Specialist Clerks Ms. Nicole Michelle Quinata and Ms. Isabella Shinohara details about the ongoing activities in line with the island-wide census.
The first phase, which is Address Listing, will take place during the entire month of February and will be conducted during the daylight hours (between 8 A.M. and 7 P.M.). During this phase, there is no need for residents to interact with census workers. Subsequently and beginning in March and throughout the summer, the actual census taking will proceed with enumerators traveling door-to-door in their assigned neighborhoods to conduct the in-person interviews of each household.
Filipinos are reminded to make time to complete the census interview process to ensure that they are counted. The Guam Census Office representatives also emphasized that the U.S. Census is intended to capture data about every household throughout the United States and is not used to determine citizenship. This means that all residents, whether citizen or permanent resident or temporary foreign worker, are qualified to participate in the census. They further reassured the attendees at the town hall meeting that all census data are protected by stringent Federal laws to maintain confidentiality.
Meanwhile, Filipinos who expect to travel off-island for an extended period are urged to arrange with the Guam Census Office how to complete the enumeration process before or after their travel.
