PH Embassy in Damascus Commemorates 34th Anniversary of EDSA Revolution

DAMASCUS 04 March 2020 – On the occasion of the 34th anniversary of the EDSA Revolution, the Philippines Embassy in Damascus commemorated the event by conducting a series of activities on 25 and 26 February 2020, with the Embassy personnel and wards of the Filipino Workers Resource Center (FWRC).

On 25 February 2020, the Philippine Embassy held a flag raising ceremony followed by video presentation featuring the life of President Corazon C. Aquino and her pivotal role in the revolution which restored democracy in the Philippines. A financial literacy seminar with the theme “Be Money Smart, to Live a Better Life” was conducted by FWRC Acting Housemother Kathleen Llarena, which encouraged the FWRC wards to save and invest their hard-earned money.

In his remarks, Charge d’ Affaires and Consul General to Damascus Alex V. Lamadrid highlighted  the important role of President Cory Aquino in leading the country after more than 20 years of dictatorship. He encouraged the attendees, to emulate the positive values of the late former President as a woman leader.

During the financial literacy seminar, Ms. Kathleen Llarena explained the importance of financial planning, as well as savings and investments vehicles. She provided tips on how to become an effective “budgetarian” and some “iponaryo” tips. She also explained other savings programs of the Philippine government, particularly through the Pag-IBIG and Social Security System (SSS) that could benefit overseas Filipinos.

The Embassy offered an Ash Wednesday Mass, officiated by Fr. Joseph Constantine, a Franciscan priest of the St. Anthony of Padua Church in Damascus, with the Embassy personnel and wards of the FWRC on 26 February 2020. Embassy personnel and FWRC wards prayed for the souls of the heroes and leaders who died and contributed to the EDSA Revolution.

A total of 48 participants composed of 36 female wards from FWRC, nine males, and three females attended the two-day celebrations. END
