OSLO 02 January 2020 — The Philippine Embassy in Oslo including the different Philippine foreign service posts joined the countdown of the Philippine government to the Quincentennial Celebrations on 14 December 2019. The said celebration will culminate on April 27, 2021.
The Quincentennial Celebrations marks the victory of Filipino hero Lapu-Lapu against the Spanish fleet of Ferdinand Magellan, a battle which is now known in historical books as the Battle of Mactan. As mandated in Executive Order No. 55 signed by President Rodrigo Duterte on 8 May 2019, the Quincentennial Celebrations also commemorate other historical events that happened in the Philippines from 1519 to 1522 including the celebration of the first Catholic mass in the Philippines and the first circumnavigation of the world by Magellan and Juan Sebastian Elcano.
