LOS ANGELES 06 January 2020 — The Philippine Consulate General in Los Angeles – Sentro Rizal, in partnership with PURO ARTE, an association of Filipino-American artists in Los Angeles, held an Artists Talk at the Consulate General’s Community Hall on 20 November 2019.

The Artists Talk, which is a part of PURO ARTE’s series of visual arts activities entitled, ka.si.ni.ngan, featured renowned filmmaker, Raymond Red, one of the pioneer figures of modern Filipino alternative cinema, and Dr. Edson Cabalfin, curator of “The City with Two Navels”, which is  the contribution of the Philippines in the 2018 Venice Biennale on Architecture Exhibit.

In his opening remarks, Deputy Consul General Ambrosio Brian F. Enciso III commended Mr. Ruben Domingo, the leader of PURO ARTE, for his commitment and passion in promoting the development and propagation of a unique brand of Philippine culture and arts by encouraging Filipino artists through programs designed to display and to promote their works beyond our country’s shores, such as the ka.si.ni.ngan event.

Dr. Cabalfin explained the intertwined relationship between neoliberalism and contemporary Philippine urbanism and architecture.  He also discussed how the Philippines was represented in the twentieth-century international fairs and expositions, which influenced the Philippines’ images in the eyes of the world, as well as how the Filipinos viewed themselves.

On the other hand, Director Red presented the development of Philippine cinema through the years and gave the audience an opportunity to watch his short film entitled, “Anino” (Shadow), which made him the first Filipino to be awarded the prestigious Palme D'Or award at the Cannes International Film Festival in 2000.  END
