PH Embassy in Cairo, International Organization for Migration Egypt Conducts Briefing on Migrant Women’s Rights

CAIRO 17 December 2019 —The Philippine Embassy in Cairo and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) Egypt conducted a Briefing on Migrant Women’s Rights at the Holiday Inn in Maadi, Cairo on 13 December 2019.

Approximately 100 participants from the Filipino community and their Egyptian relatives, and officials from other ASEAN missions attended the event.

Philippine Ambassador to Egypt Sulpicio M. Confiado in his welcome remarks, underscored the Philippine government’s continuing efforts in protecting the rights and welfare of Overseas Filipinos, and addressing numerous issues facing women. Ambassador Confiado also mentioned that other labor-sending countries is now starting to look at the Philippine system as model for migrant protection.

IOM Chief of Mission to the Arab Republic of Egypt Laurent de Boeck expressed his commitment to continue working with the Philippine Embassy to raise awareness of the Filipino community on different migration issues.

During the briefing, IOM Egypt’s team discussed the procedures and policies on civil registration, and shared tips on preventing and reporting cases of sexual and gender-based violence. They also discussed IOM’s services for migrants, as well as basic rights of migrant women in Egypt.

IOM Egypt’s consultants were present to provide free legal services to the attendees.

The briefing is part of the Philippine Embassy’s 18-Day Campaign to End Violence Against Women (VAW). #OrangeTheWorld VAW bag tags and button pins were distributed to participants. VAW videos were also played during the event.

The briefing is also in celebration of the Month of Overseas Filipinos and an advance celebration of the International Migrants’ Day.

The successfully conducted briefing is one of the activities by Philippine Embassy and IOM Egypt to raise awareness of the rights of Filipinas as women and migrants in Egypt. END
