BUJUMBURA 05 February 2020 – The newly-accredited Philippine Ambassador to Burundi Alex G. Chua met with the Filipino community in Bujumbura on 05 February 2020, before Ambassador Chua’s presentation of credentials to Burundi President Pierre Nkurunziza.

Despite not having a formal association, Filipinos in Burundi maintain close contact with each other under the de facto leadership of Mr. Bernard Osorio. They regularly gather during weekends for sports activities.

Recalling the last visit of Philippine Embassy officials in February 2018, the Filipino community members were happy to meet Ambassador Chua. They shared that their situation in Burundi is currently stable and that Burundi is scheduled to have national elections in May 2020.

Filipinos came to Burundi as their companies, which have established headquarters in other African countries, assign employees to neighboring states on a rotating basis. The number of Filipinos in Burundi used to be larger in the 1990s after the civil war, when many Filipino soldiers were among the members of the UN peace corps. END
