ROME 02 January 2020 — As part of its efforts to extend all forms of assistance to Filipinos under its jurisdiction, the Philippine Embassy in Rome organized a training on Life Support and Pre-Hospital Care for the Filipino community in Rome and Embassy personnel on 19 December 2019 at the Embassy’s Multi-Purpose Hall.

The resource speaker for the training was Mr. Dindo Malanyaon, President and Founder of iParamedici, a Filipino non-governmental organization dedicated to providing first aid and emergency transport to sick and wounded overseas Filipinos and educating the Filipino community in Italy about securing health, education and social services. Mr. Malanyaon was a 2018 Philippine Presidential Banaag Awardee for his contributions significantly benefiting overseas Filipino communities in Italy.

During the training, Mr. Malanyaon discussed the definition of emergency, i.e., a situation that is life-threatening and requires immediate action, in as short as 15 seconds at times, and differentiated it from urgency, which is not necessarily life-threatening and can be deferred. He stressed the importance of scene survey recognition in order to determine the proper approach and action in emergency situations. This includes securing one’s safety first before helping others.

He also encouraged Filipinos to acquire basic life support skills at the least, as this can not only save lives but also help them find better job opportunities and employment conditions, such as higher salaries and added benefits.

Meanwhile, the Embassy having personnel trained in basic life support and making life support devices and equipment available in its premises could benefit the public in invaluable ways. “These may spell the difference between life and death. Realizing these would be considered as an extra effort, a step ahead by the Embassy, a public institution, in improving its services to the people,” expressed Mr. Malanyaon. END
