YANGON 18 December 2019 – The Philippine Embassy in Yangon led by Chargé d’ Affaires Stephanie Alexis A. Cruz joined the simultaneous launch of the 500-day countdown to the 2021 Quincentennial Commemoration at the Philippine Embassy grounds in Yangon, Myanmar last 14 December 2019.
Chargé d’ Affaires Cruz explained in her message the significance of this launch and how it leads to the 500th Anniversary of the victory at Mactan in April 2021. The countdown is being done to raise awareness and emphasize the Filipino ancestors’ roles and how they saved the almost dying crew during the first circumnavigation of the world. She expressed that we should not forget the bravery of our heroes such as Lapu-Lapu in his victory against foreign influence during the Battle of Mactan and how this act served as an inspiration to later leaders, heroes, martyrs, and succeeding generations – all leading to what the Filipino nation is today.
The Philippine Embassy lit a Christmas lantern to signify the start of the countdown and then played the Quincentennial theme song Bagani. The event was also witnessed by Myanmar youth comprising the Philippine Embassy Youth Choir and their parents. END
