GENEVA 08 January 2020— The Philippines actively participated as one of only six Member States in the inaugural meeting of the Steering Group of the Migration Multi Partnership Trust Fund (MPTF) also known as the Start-Up Fund for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration chaired by IOM Director General Antonio Vitorino on 10 December 2019.
The 12 member Steering Group is composed of three donor countries, three countries representing origin, transit and destination, three stakeholders and three UN Organizations. Presenting with the DG was Mr. Philippe Grandet of the Fund Management Unit. Also, present was Jonathan Prentice of the United Nations (UN) Network on Migration Secretariat.
The Migration MPTF aims to contribute to ensuring robust, coordinated, inclusive and coherent UN system-wide support to Member States in their implementation, follow-up and review of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM).
Philippine Ambassador to United Nations Evan P. Garcia, and other International Organizations, encouraged the pursuit of interventions that would build support for the positive impact of the GCM on the ground, demonstrated along vulnerable migratory routes for both regular and irregular migration. The Philippines strongly supports the progress on the implementation of the GCM, which was adopted exactly one year before the meeting of the Steering Group, on 10 December 2018 in Marrakesh, Morocco.
