LOS ANGELES 04 May 2020 – The Philippine Consulate General in Los Angeles attended a webinar dubbed, “Sovereignty and the Belt Road Initiative” on 22 April 2020 organized by the University of Southern California US-China Institute (USCI) and moderated by the University’s Director Clayton Dube.

Geography Professor Tom Narins of the University of Albany delivered a two-hour lecture on the topic based on the 2019 article he co-authored entitled,“Missing from the Map: Chinese Exceptionalism, Sovereignty Regimes and the Belt Road Initiative (BRI)”.

In his lecture, Professor Narins explored how various types of sovereignty regimes explain the many forms and manifestations of Chinese power in the context of the BRI in ways that conventional international relations frameworks fail to account for.

Joining the webinar’s over 100 participants from different parts of the world were the Philippine Consulate General in Los Angeles’ Political and Economic Officer Consul Rea G. Oreta and Information Officer Mary Grace “Joss” Leaño.

USCI was founded in 2006 with a goal to provide understanding on the complex and evolving US-China relations by conducting social science research, public fora, and trainings.  END
