TORONTO 02 June 2020 – The Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB) formally opened its celebration of Filipino Heritage Month and Filipino Heritage Day on 12 June 2020. The usual celebration at all elementary and secondary Catholic schools in Toronto was replaced with a virtual celebration due to the COVID-19 pandemic as schools remain closed in Toronto. The Provincial Government confirmed that schools will not re-open until September 2020.

The official website of the TCDSB uploaded the Message of Philippine Consul General to Toronto Orontes V. Castro where the latter expressed his appreciation of TCDSB’s partnership with the Philippine Consulate General “in strengthening in every Filipino youth, especially those who are growing up as second or third-generation Filipinos in Canada, the consciousness of being a Filipino and awareness of their Philippine Heritage…, as well as in educating children to grow, not only in knowledge, but also in grace, faith, hope and charity.”

The Proclamation of 12 June as Filipino Heritage Day and June as Filipino Heritage Month in the TCDSB annually was signed on 12 June 2018 by Chair of the TCDSB Barbara Poplawski and Director of Education Rory McGuckin, and witnessed by late Philippine Consul General Rosalita S. Prospero and Mr. Garry Tanuan, a Filipino-Canadian elected Trustee to the TCDSB, representing Ward 8 – Northeast Scarborough. The proclamation recognizes the long and rich history of Filipino-Canadians and their contributions to Canada.

As the Toronto Catholic district schools approach its celebration of Filipino Heritage Day, there will be scheduled online activities and uploaded video presentations. END
