LOS ANGELES 17 June 2020 – The Philippine Consulate General in Los Angeles attended a live video conference entitled, “German Ambassador to the US, Emily Haber in Conversation with Amb. John Emerson” on 09 June 2020. The conference was part of the series of online discussions arranged by the Los Angeles World Affairs Council & Town Hall (LAWACTH) on COVID-19 pandemic responses from around the world.
German Ambassador to the United States Ambassador Emily Haber shared that the key to Germany’s successful response to the pandemic is its ability to move forward as a state, coupled with transparency and consensus on policies. Understanding the complexity of science is profoundly important to the German government’s decisions. Two major components of Germany’s successful COVID-19 response are early testing and the preparation of local hospital systems, most especially of intensive care units (ICUs).
Given the economic fallout brought by COVID-19, Germany recognized the need to find new ways to address its long-term impact in a way that would benefit the most affected population and underscore the principle of solidarity. It may be recalled that Germany’s successful COVID-19 response strategy has earned plaudits from the World Health Organization and the rest of the world.
Representing the Consulate General at the event were Consul Rea G. Oreta and Information Officer Mary Grace “Joss” D. Leaño.
Ambassador Haber has been German Ambassador to the United States since 2018. She is an expert on Russia and has served as State Secretary in Germany’s Foreign Ministry and the Ministry of the Interior. Ambassador Emerson is the Chair of the American Council on Germany and former U.S. Ambassador to Germany.
Established in 1953, Los Angeles World Affairs Council (LAWAC) is a non-partisan and non-profit organization that promotes understanding of global economic and political developments. END
