WELLINGTON 17 June 2020 – Philippine Ambassador to New Zealand Jesus S. Domingo and Labour Attaché Angel Borja Jr. met with His Worship, Jim Boult, Mayor of Queenstown and his team on 05 June 2020. The Embassy was joined by Queenstown Filipino community leaders Dennis Navasca, Cecile D. Mendoza, and Father Jaime Lalaguna.
The Ambassador conveyed the Embassy’s appreciation for the Mayor’s unwavering support for the Filipino Workers in his District. Many Filipinos face layoffs as Queenstown, NZ’s prime tourism destination, was badly hit by the economic downturn caused by COVID-19 pandemic. Ambassador Domingo and Mayor Boult discussed ways for mutual cooperation during the ongoing crisis to assist OFWs, and to revive the Queenstown tourism industry.
On 06 June 2020 the Embassy Team addressed the Queenstown OFW Community at a Pulong-Pulong organized by the Queenstown Association of Migrant Pinoys (QAMPI). The Ambassador and Labour Attaché briefed the Community on the support being provided by the Embassy and Philippine Overseas Labor Office for OFWs and assured them of the Philippine Government’s concern for their well-being. Domingo and Borja, together with Community volunteers, distributed DOLE-AKAP funds and food parcels to the assembled OFWs. END
