NAIROBI 17 June 2020 — Philippine Ambassador to Kenya Alex G. Chua and Madame Marie Marla Chua, together with the personnel of the Philippine Embassy in Nairobi, commemorated the 122nd Anniversary of the Proclamation of Philippine Independence through the conduct of a simple flag raising ceremony on 12 June 2020.
In his remarks, Ambassador Chua stressed that this year’s Philippine Independence Day, with the theme, “Kalayaan 2020: Tungo sa Bansang Malaya, Nagbabayanihan, at Ligtas,” truly resonates with each Filipino in East Africa where, among other concerns, healthcare systems are challenging and job security is uncertain. The theme underscores the harder life in Africa experienced by Filipinos in order provide for their families back home and contribute to the economy of the Philippines.
There are around 350 Filipinos in Kenya, most of whom are located in Nairobi.
The Philippine Embassy in Nairobi serves about 1,500 Filipinos in East Africa, as its jurisdiction includes Kenya, Burundi, Comoros, Democratic Republic of Congo, Malawi, Republic of the Congo, Rwanda, Seychelles, Somalia, South Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda.
