THE HAGUE 23 June 2020 – The Philippine Embassy in The Hague assisted 53 Filipino seafarers who were stranded on 19 June 2020 in Schiphol Airport after their flight to Manila via Tokyo was cancelled. They were part of a group of seafarers from different vessels who were scheduled to take a connecting flight to Narita Airport, with nine of them able to leave Schiphol Airport to spend the night in a hotel.
The Embassy personnel visited the 53 seafarers in the airport and extended them financial assistance. The Embassy also worked with key offices of the Department of Foreign Affairs in Manila, namely, the Office of the Undersecretary for Migrant Workers’ Affairs and the Intelligence and Security Unit, in arranging for a special repatriation flight to bring home the stranded seafarers on 20 June 2020.
Soon after Philippine government authorities granted authority to proceed with the repatriation flight, Embassy personnel went back to the airport and sent off 46 of the 53 seafarers. The other seven decided to take other flights as arranged by their respective employers.
The Embassy also advised and provided them with the latest guidelines regarding arrival procedures at the airport. END
