NAIROBI 24 June 2020 – The Philippine Embassy in Nairobi’s personnel joined the online celebration of the 6th International Day of Yoga on 21 June 2020 with the theme, “Yoga at home and yoga with family.”

The Indian High Commission in Nairobi hosted the online celebration, which was made available through their YouTube channel and other social media platforms.

In his video message, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that “yoga has emerged as a force for unity and deepens the bonds of humanity. It does not discriminate. It goes beyond race, color, gender, faith, and nations.”

United Nations Office in Nairobi Director-General Zainab Hawa Bangura also relayed in her remarks that yoga reduces stress to provide an outlet to address mental health and physical well-being challenges that people are experiencing from being confined at home for an extended period of time.

Recognizing its universal appeal, the United Nations proclaimed 21 June 2014 as the International Day of Yoga. The World Health Organization mentioned yoga as a means to improve health in its Global Action Plan on Physical Activity 2018-2030.

The Embassy encouraged its personnel and their families to join in the virtual event in their homes as part of its wellness program and in solidarity with the 6th International Day of Yoga celebration. END
