LOS ANGELES 28 July 2020 – Philippine Consul General to Los Angeles Adelio Angelito S. Cruz joined a virtual town hall meeting with the Filipino community hosted by the Cedars Sinai Research Center for Health Equity on 22 July 2020.

The virtual meeting was arranged by Cedars Sinai for the presentation of the initial results of the Cancer and Healthcare in Los Angeles Survey, the initial stage of an ongoing survey being undertaken by the Research Center on cancer knowledge, attitudes, and behavior among Filipino-Americans in California. The Consulate General was one of Cedars Sinai’s community partners in promoting the survey.

Some of the survey’s key findings revealed that the most prevalent type of cancer among women and men are breast cancer and prostate cancer, respectively. Common risk factors are obesity, smoking, infectious diseases and underutilization of cancer screening services.

During the virtual meeting, Consul General Cruz highlighted the importance of cancer research among Filipinos and conveyed the Consulate General’s full support to the endeavor. “Cedars Sinai’s cancer research among Filipinos in California is an undertaking that we help promote because we strongly believe in its potentials and positive impact on the Filipino community”, said Consul General Cruz.

“Our involvement here is also our way of paying tribute to Filipino healthcare and essential workers around the world who labor tirelessly, braving the risks of a deadly pandemic to deliver much-needed help and services to the vulnerable,” the Consul General added.

Aside from the video tribute to Filipino healthcare workers entitled, “Bayaning Pilipino para sa Buong Mundo,” prepared by the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) in Manila, the Consul General also shared a video prepared by the Bases and Conversion Development Authority, featuring the New Clark City Sports Complex. This upbeat presentation was a refreshing way to see the Filipino people’s proud moments and be reminded of their resilient spirit. The New Clark City is a new investment destination just north of Luzon that will soon become the country’s newest metropolis.
