PH Consulate General in Manado Checks Up on the Welfare of Filipinos in Immigration Center

MANADO 24 August 2020 — The Philippine Consulate General in Manado officials visited 26 Filipinos currently in the custody of the immigration authority in Manado to check up on their welfare and apprise them of the effort of the Consulate General in facilitating their repatriation on 19 August 2020.

In a meeting with immigration officials, Philippine Consulate General in Manado officials invited the former’s cooperation in exploring alternative ways to repatriate the Filipinos given that airline services between Davao and Manado have ceased operations due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Philippine Consulate General in Manado assured immigration officials that this effort will involve securing the cooperation of the Ministry of Transportation and the port authority in Bitung.

Of the 26 Filipinos in RUDENIM-Manado, 17 were apprehended by Indonesian fishery law enforcement for allegedly fishing in Indonesian Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), while nine were arrested by immigration authorities for illegal entry.

The Philippine Consulate General in Manado took the opportunity to discuss with the fishermen the importance of knowing the location of the Philippine southern border and of using GPS devices and appropriate maps when fishing in waters near the border. END
