YANGON 28 August 2020 – A total of 10 Myanmar nationals qualify for the Scholarships for Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Researchers in Cambodia, Lao PDR, and Myanmar (CLM) program offered by the Philippine Department of Science and Technology (DOST). The successful candidates will enter the Master of Science (M.S.) or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programs of the University of the Philippines (UP) Manila, UP Los Baños, and De La Salle University (DLSU) Manila.
The scholarship program is an offshoot of the 9th Informal ASEAN Ministerial on Science and Technology held in October 2016 in Siem Reap, Cambodia. It aims to promote human resource development in engineering and sciences for sustainable socio-economic development of the ASEAN region, particularly in CLM. The scholarship award is offered for the first term of the 2020-2021 academic year. However, due to the uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic, the researchers may defer starting their programs to the next academic year.
A four-member delegation led by DOST Science Education Institute Director, Dr. Josette Biyo, interviewed a total of 21 scholarship applicants endorsed by the Philippine Embassy in Yangon, on 11 March 2020 in Yangon, Myanmar. The panel also performed an assessment of the applicants for admission to their University of choice.
From 2017 to present, DOST-SEI has awarded a total of 22 scholarships to Myanmar citizens. END
