PH Joins Consensus on Strengthening the IOM Management

 Geneva IOM

GENEVA 09 November 2020 – Philippine Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office and other International Organizations in Geneva Evan P. Garcia affirmed Philippine support for the International Organization for Migration (IOM) by joining consensus to adopt the proposal of IOM Director General Antonio Vitorino, to strengthen the top management of the IOM.

During the 4th Special Session of the IOM Council on 28 October 2020 where a decision to appoint two Deputy Director Generals was adopted, Ambassador Garcia said that “the country’s long support to the IOM, especially now as the UN migration agency, underlines the great importance given by the Philippines to having an active, fit for purpose, action-oriented IOM, in this critical juncture for human mobility.  It is hoped that this effort will result in better implementation across the world of right-based, principled and dignified migration governance, through the Global Compact on Migration, among other mechanisms.”

As part of its work in helping ensure orderly and humane management of migration, IOM has instituted programs in health emergencies to  include access to basic services, facilitating safe mobility in pandemic response and recovery, prevention of xenophobia and fostering inclusion of migrants, among others, working alongside with other international organizations. IOM also serves as the coordinator and secretariat of the UN Network on Migration, which respects the principles of the Global Compact on Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration. END
