Stronger Economic Cooperation in BIMP-EAGA Region Pushed at Meet with Brunei Business Council

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN 19 February 2021 – The Philippine Embassy in Brunei pushed for stronger bilateral economic and business cooperation within the framework of the Brunei-Malaysia-Indonesia-Philippine East Asia Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) during a recent meeting with the new officers of the Brunei Darussalam BIMP-EAGA Business Council (BD BEBC) at the Philippine Chancery on 15 February 2021.

Philippine Ambassador to Brunei Christopher B. Montero welcomed the interest of the BD BEBC to explore opportunities for enhanced trade and investment between Brunei and the Philippines, particularly economic exchanges that will support the development of small and medium business enterprises in Mindanao.

The Embassy and the BD BEBC underscored the importance of enhanced connectivity as a key driver for increased commercial relations between Brunei and the growth centers of the Philippines in the islands of Mindanao and Palawan. They committed to work together in implementing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed in 2019 between the BD BEBC and Reefer Line Express Filipinas, a Davao-based logistics cargo company. 

Both sides likewise agreed to work closely in the implementation of the Philippines-Brunei MOU on Halal Industry and Halal Export Development and Promotion signed in 2017, particularly in the Philippine government’s capacity-building efforts to strengthen its halal industry. 

The BD BEBC delegation was led by Chairman Pengiran Haji Haris bin Pengiran Haji Durahman and Director of Public Relations Ak Kamal Fahmi Pengiran Haji Suhaimi. END
