HANOI 29 April 2020 — The Philippine Embassy in Hanoi organized a lecture on Philippine History During the Pre-Colonial Period and Magellan's Expedition and Discovery of the Philippines for Filipino children in Vietnam in celebration of the 500th Anniversary of the Victory at Mactan on 27 April 2021 at the Philippine Embassy.

In his welcome remarks, Philippine Ambassador to Vietnam Meynardo Montealegre emphasized the importance of the quincentennial commemorations as it pays tribute to our ancestors' courage and valor, and expressed hope that this inspires those in attendance to love and serve our country. He also highlighted the theme Victory and Humanity as two concepts that exemplify the Filipino traits of bravery, compassion, generosity and kindness.

Ms. Katrina Issa Gelaga, a Filipino teacher, explained the reasons for celebrating the quincentennial. She discussed the Philippine pre-colonial period, including the different waves of migrants and their way of life, followed by the Magellan's expedition, the discovery of the Philippines and the Battle of Mactan.

The participants also crafted cut-out paper dolls of Lapu-Lapu and other historical figures using downloadable templates provided in the National Quincentennial Commemorations website.

The parents of the participants welcomed the opportunity for their children to learn Philippine history in a classroom setting as most of the children are homeschooled. They also look forward to participating in future lectures and activities of the Embassy for Filipino children. END
