JAKARTA 18 May 2021 – Philippine Ambassador to Indonesia Leehiong T. Wee, presented two pieces of “bulul” sculptures to the ASEAN Secretariat Art Gallery during a handover ceremony attended by ASEAN Community and Corporate Affairs Deputy Secretary-General Tran Duc Binh, other officials from the same office, Director Lee Yoong Yoong and Assistant Director Romeo Arca, and Philippine Permanent Representative to ASEAN Noel Servigon.
Ambassador Wee expressed appreciation for the ASEAN Secretariat for graciously accepting his personal gift. The bulul pieces are wooden figures carved by the Ifugao tribe in the Philippines’ Northern Luzon, used to guard and multiply their rice crop. The sculptures are highly stylized representations of ancestors and are thought to give power and wealth from the presence of the ancestral spirit.
Ambassador Wee had the pleasure of presenting these two indigenous artworks to be displayed in the art gallery of the ASEAN Secretariat. The bulul pieces are the seventh cultural art piece gifted by the Philippines to the ASEAN Secretariat. END
