Ambassador Manalo Reaffirms PH Support to South-South Cooperation in Implementing the 2030 Agenda while Responding to COVID-19

UNITED NATIONS, NEW YORK, 04 June 2021 – Speaking at the 20th Session of the High-Level Committee (HLC) on South-South Cooperation (SSC) held on 01-04 June 2021, Ambassador Enrique A. Manalo, reaffirmed PH support and commitment to SSC as an effective and complementary modality for cooperation among developing countries, given similarities in circumstances, government capacities and views on national development strategies.
In his statement, Ambassador Manalo said that the COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the potential of science and rapid technological change to address exacerbated and emerging challenges; and underlined that “partnerships that accelerate and strengthen developing countries’ recovery, response and resilience against COVID-19 and future external shocks and epidemics/pandemics are very crucial.”
Ambassador Manalo also reaffirmed the key role of the United Nations funds, programs, specialized agencies, UN Regional Commissions, including the UN country teams, in supporting and promoting South-South cooperation and welcomed the proposed setting up in Manila of a new South-South and Triangular Cooperation (SSTC) Facility.
The High-level Committee (HLC) on South-South Cooperation, a subsidiary body of the UN General Assembly, is the main policymaking body on South-South cooperation (SSC). The 20th Session is the first HLC to be convened since the adoption of the outcome document of the second High-level United Nations Conference on South-South Cooperation (BAPA+40) held in Buenos Aires Argentina on 20-22 March 2019.
