20 May 2014 – The Philippine Consulate General in Honolulu was invited to the 2014 Adopt-a-Mom Day organized by the Japanese Women’s Society Foundation (JWSF), on May 18 at the Hale Pulama Mau, Kuakini. Hale Pulama Mau is Hawaiian for “House of Cherishing Care”. It is a seniors’ home.
Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell issued a Proclamation declaring May 18 as Adopt-a-Mom Day in Honolulu, Hawaii in recognition of the JWSF’s advocacy of caring for senior citizen mothers who do not have relatives to take care or visit them. This year, the event was expanded to include two men. The senior citizen residents of Hale Pulama Mau are mostly of Japanese descent, with a few Filipino senior citizens.
Governor Neil Abercrombie also issued a Resolution proclaiming May 18 as Adopt-a-Mom Day, and on 2016, Adopt-a-Mom day will be included in the Official Calendar of the State of Hawaii. END
