UNITED NATIONS, NEW YORK 30 September 2021 - Foreign Secretary Teodoro L. Locsin, Jr. and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan Mukhtar Tileuberdi renewed friendly relations between the Philippines and Kazakhstan, and discussed the further strengthening of bilateral and multilateral cooperation between the two countries, at the sidelines of the 76th session of the UN General Assembly.

Secretary Locsin expressed support for Kazakhstan’s bid for membership of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Far East Group, and for the United Nations resolution on the Central Asia Nuclear-Weapon Free Zone (CANWFZ).

The two ministers also discussed matters of mutual concern such as the vaccine gap, the climate crisis, and the situation in Afghanistan. Secretary Locsin specifically cited the vaccine QazVac developed by Kazakhstan. Foreign Minister Tileuberdi said they only produce some 1 million vaccines a month for their own use, but next year they hope to produce more, and perhaps they could begin donating or selling to other countries. Secretary Locsin said that cooperation on vaccines would be beneficial for both countries.

Secretary Locsin also congratulated Foreign Minister Tileuberdi on Kazakhstan’s current chairmanship of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia (CICA) and expressed continued support for CICA and Kazakhstan in advancing cooperation towards promoting peace, security and stability in Asia.

The Philippines and Kazakhstan will commemorate their 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations in March 2022. END
