UNITED NATIONS, NEW YORK 30 September 2021 — DFA Secretary Teodoro L. Locsin, Jr. met with the United Arab Emirates’ (UAE) Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber on 22 September 2021 to discuss climate-related issues.
Secretary Locsin expressed the Philippines’ support for UAE’s bid to host COP28, the 28th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). This annual conference convenes world leaders to discuss how to address the issue of climate change.
UAE envisions a COP28 that showcases customizable solutions to climate change that meet the needs of different regions, including developing countries.
Secretary Locsin also encouraged investments in renewable energy in the Philippines. In reply, Minister Al Jaber said that the UAE looks forward to expanding cooperation in this sector, as the Philippines is a valued partner.
The Philippines submitted its first nationally-determined contribution (NDC) on 15 April 2021. The NDCs embody a country’s climate actions and are a key obligation under the Paris Climate Agreement, which the Philippines ratified in 2014.
Secretary Locsin and Minister Al Jaber intend to meet again at COP26 in Glasgow, Scotland in November 2021. END
