PH Consulate General in Shanghai Participates in Global Conference on Aquaculture

SHANGHAI 30 September – Consul Conrado B. Demdem, Jr. and Attaché Ronaldo B. Villanueva of the Philippine Consulate General in Shanghai participated in the   Global Conference on Aquaculture (GCA) and its parallel event, the South-South and Triangular Cooperation (SSTC) High-Level Roundtable Meeting for Sustainable Aquaculture Development held on 23-24 September.

Organized by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the Network of Aquaculture Centers in Asia-Pacific (NACA) with the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs (MARA), the hybrid event tackled international cooperation on sustainable aquaculture development and food security.

At the SSTC Roundtable High-Level Meeting, Department of Agriculture Undersecretary Cheryl Marie Natividad-Caballero, joining virtually from Manila, called on countries to harness the potential of aquaculture as a tool to achieve the 2030 Agenda on Sustainable Development. She emphasized enhancing cooperation on capacity-building, technology transfer, and information-sharing platforms to address the challenges faced by the aquaculture sector.

The two-day event concluded with the adoption of the Shanghai Declaration on Aquaculture for Food and Sustainable Development.

Consul Demdem also met with Dr. Wan Rong, President of the Shanghai Ocean University (SHOU) to discuss opportunities for cooperation between the Philippines and SHOU, including linkages with counterpart Philippine institutions of higher learning, as well as scholarship grants to Filipino students.
