PH Embassy Joins ASEAN Missions in Business Visit to Maranhao State, Aims to Enhance Economic Cooperation with Brazil

BRASILIA, 04 October 2021 - The Philippine Embassy in Brasilia Charge d’ affaires, ad interim Ms. Leilani S. Feliciano joined the ASEAN Heads of Diplomatic Missions in Brasilia under the ASEAN Committee in Brasilia (ACB) and ACB Working Group for an Official Visit to the Brazilian state of Maranhao upon the invitation of Maranhao Governor Flavio Dino de Castro e Costa, from 20- 23 September 2021.

The ACB Heads of Diplomatic Missions visited Sao Luis, the capital city of Maranhao, where they met with the state officials, port authority officials, and entrepreneurs from the state of Maranhao.

Among the State officials met by the group were Maranhao Maranhao Governor Flavio Dino de Castro e Costa; Deputy Governor Carlos Brandão; EMAP President/CEO Ted Lago ; Secretary of State for Industry, Trade and Energy (Seinc), Simplício Araújo; Secretary of State for Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries (Sagrima), Sérgio Delmiro; President of the Board of Trade of the State of Maranhão (Jucema), Sérgio Sombra; President of the Federation of Agriculture and Livestock of the State of Maranhão (Faema), Raimundo Coelho; President of the Federation of Industries of the State of Maranhão (Fiema), Edilson Baldez.

In one of the groups’ meetings with Deputy Governor Brandao, CDA Feliciano expressed that some of the food products presented by Maranhao business people and entrepreneurs might suit the Filipino taste such as hot sauces, jams and jellies, and the artisanal biscuits.

She informed the body that Brazil is Philippines largest trading partner in the Latin American region, with the total bilateral trade between two countries steadily growing for the past three years, but declined last year due to the onslaught of the COVID-19 pandemic. CDA Feliciano likewise conveyed that the Philippines looks forward to diversifying its exports to Brazil by introducing more world class Phili[ppine products such as South Sea pearls, furniture, and dried mangoes, as well as increasing exports of information technology products, automotive parts, electrical and electronics equipment, personal care products, among others.  

The Philippines also seeks to enhance economic and business cooperation with heightened interaction between both countries’ business and industries through participation in each others’ international fairs and exhibitions, inviting Brazilian businessmen to the Philippines’ Manila FAME and IFEX international exhibitions. She also informed the body that the Philippines has a significant investment in Brazil with the International Container Terminal Services, Inc., a Philippine company, in Tecon Suape in Pernambuco amounting to USD200 million. Investments from Brazil to the Philippines include Brazilian pharmaceutical company Europharma. Finally, she also promoted the Philippines to adventurous Brazilian travellers as the world’s premiere diving destination and invited them to visit the Philippines after the pandemic is controlled.
