GENEVA, 18 November 2021 – The chiefs of the ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity (ACB) and the Convention on Wetlands (Ramsar) Secretariat met on 18 November 2021 to discuss current and future cooperation on wetlands and biodiversity management and protection.
ACB Executive Director Dr. Theresa Mundita S. Lim and RAMSAR Secretariat Secretary General Ms. Martha Rojas Urrego exchanged views on current programs and initiatives, related to the Wetlands (RAMSAR) Convention and the Convention on Biological Diversity, and advancing the cooperation between the two institutions, including on the National Wetland Inventories.
The ACB, which is based in Los Baños, the Philippines, is an intergovernmental regional centre of excellence that facilitates co-operation and co-ordination among the 10 members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and with relevant national governments, regional and international organizations on the CBD. Among its key programmes are the ASEAN Heritage Parks (AHP) Programme for the protection of wetlands and the ASEAN Flyway Network (AFN) for the conservation of migratory birds. The AFN emerged from an earlier cooperation project between ACB and RAMSAR.
The Convention on Wetlands of International Importance, called the Ramsar Convention, is an intergovernmental treaty that provides the framework for national action and international cooperation for the conservation and wise use of wetlands and their resources. The Ramsar Convention is the only global environmental treaty that deals with a particular ecosystem. The Secretariat is based in Gland, Switzerland. END
